What is cybercrime?

A short story

Recently a college student (Lets call him Mr X) discovered the joy of orkutting. He liked his friends sister (Miss Y) but the girl was not ready to enter into a relationship. She was also not much into computers. After some months, frustrated Mr X created a fake profile on her name in orkut and sent obscene messages in the college community present in Orkut. Soon she was flooded with idecent calls from various students from different colleges. Mr X pretending to be genuinely concerned, approached the girls father to expose her activity on Orkut. He explained that it can be a mischief by someone and that she must be careful. The panicked father registered a complaint in the cybercrime cell and requested the police to catch the culprit who created the fake profile.

Orchidseven is a consultant to various legal bodies and was approached by the police to investigate the crime.

The challenges faced by Orchidseven experts were:
  1. To trace the recent activity by the fake profile.
  2. Check scraps of all the users in the concerned community for any clues.
  3. Understand the psychology behind the obscene messages left by the fake profile.
  4. Co-relate the events to list possible suspects.
Within 24 hours Orchidseven consultants were able to provide evidence that the fake profile was created by none other than Mr X. The investigation process included forensic analysis of the computers and methodological interrogation of the prime suspects.
